The Long Work

The Major Arcana and the stages of the alchemical Great Work describe the same sequence. The Fool is the raw material. The World is the finished stone. Everything between is an operation performed on you.

Your deck begins incomplete

You start with all fifty-six Minor Arcana and no Majors at all. Early readings are small and practical, because that is all the deck can say.

Each chapter you seal adds its Major to your deck permanently. The readings acquire weight as you earn it. By the end you hold all seventy-eight — and every one of them means something to you, because you were there when it arrived.

It cannot be rushed

A chapter cannot be sealed on the day it is opened. You draw, you write, and then you leave it alone until tomorrow.

That gap is the point. This is not an app for a single sitting, and it will not let you treat it as one. Twenty-two chapters is twenty-two days at the theoretical minimum, and nobody moves at the theoretical minimum.

Each chapter is an operation

Calcination, dissolution, separation, putrefaction, distillation, projection. A chapter opens with a passage describing the operation in chemical and human terms at once. Then a spread. Then a question, and space to answer it in your own words.

The spread's shape diagrams its operation. Separation deals two piles. Circulation deals a wheel. Distillation deals a vertical ascent from residue to condensate. Justice deals a balance, because a balance is two pans.

It teaches its own vocabulary

Alchemy has a technical language and the app does not assume you have it. Every term — calcination, nigredo, decan, solve et coagula — is tappable wherever it appears, and opens a short definition of what it meant in the laboratory and what it means for you. Forty-six entries, searchable, cross-referenced.

The deck

Seventy-eight cards designed from the ground up rather than adapted from an existing deck. Every card carries its alchemical phase, its elemental and planetary attribution, and its Golden Dawn decan. Full meanings, upright and reversed — where reversed describes how the operation characteristically fails, rather than simply inverting what came before.

What it costs

Chapters 0 through III are free, along with free-form readings, the journal and the full deck browser. The remaining eighteen chapters are a single purchase of $6.99.

Not a subscription. The journey is finite and so is the price.
